Iapetus: The Moon That Grew A Ridge

So there is this moon orbiting Saturn called Iapetus and it looks like someone took a walnut to space and left it on a conveyor belt. Right along its equator there is a proper mountain range, a single ridgeline running for over a thousand kilometres and sticking up as much as twenty kilometres in places. Imagine an earthen spine wrapped around a ball. Odd, innit?

It was made properly weird when the Cassini spacecraft took close pictures in the mid-2000s and scientists had to admit the thing exists. The ridge makes Iapetus look lopsided, not just a plain rock but a moon wearing a belt that someone tightened too hard. The rest of the surface is two-toned: one side dark and grubby, the other bright and clean, like it only bothers to wash half its face.

Now the clever people have ideas why. One leading thought is that Iapetus once had a ring, like Saturn-lite. Bits from that ring could have collapsed down the equator and piled up, making this huge ridge. Another idea is the moon puffed up from the inside, maybe some icy plumbing doing a bit of venting and then freezing into a ridge. Both ideas are proper sci-fi sounding and both have problems, which is the point - nature's having a laugh.

What I like about it is the stupidity of the sight. You look at it and think, who put a zip on that moon? It makes you question everything you thought a moon should be. Back in the day when I was faffing about on tour someone said it looked like a cobbled street on a cake. That stuck with me.

Factually, Iapetus is one of Saturn's bigger moons, discovered centuries ago, and this ridge is real and baffling. Scientists are still squinting at data, trying to work out which theory fits best. Meanwhile the moon just sits there wearing its equatorial scar like some celestial geezer who refuses to explain himself.

So next time you look up and see Saturn in a picture, remember: one of its moons has a proper ridge like a belt. The universe does daft things and Iapetus might be one of its finest practical jokes.
