The Day a Star Left the Party Without Saying Goodbye

Imagine a proper giant star, the sort you expect to go out in a blaze like a firework, just wink out. Not a polite dimming. Not a dramatic kaboom. It brightened for a bit, then faded away and left nothing you can see. Astronomers found one of these in a galaxy called NGC 6946, about twenty or so million light years away, and their faces were gobsmacked.
Back in 2009 the star did a little flare, like it was clearing its throat. Telescopes watched, then it simply vanished. Hubble looked later and the light was gone. No leftover bright supernova. Nothing. The sensible explanation? The star collapsed straight into a black hole without the usual fireworks. Scientists call it a "failed supernova" or an "unnova." Sounds like a dodgy takeaway, but it is proper science.

Why would a star be so shy about its own death? Some huge stars, when their core gives up, fall in on themselves so fast that there is no big outward shock to blow the outer layers off. Instead the core implodes to a black hole, and most of the star gets swallowed. There might be a little puff of light as stuff plunges in, but not the stadium-level display you expect. Imagine someone stamping out the pub lights and walking off. No hugs. No goodbyes.
This is uneasy but lovely for astronomers. If many massive stars do this, it helps explain where some black holes come from and why we rarely see supernovae from the biggest blokes. It also means the cosmos is a bit rude sometimes, doing massive things and leaving no note. Proper passive aggressive, innit?
I saw the papers, laughed, then felt small. There are things out there that go out without ceremony, and humans still queue for taxis like it's the end of the world. The vanished star is a neat reminder: the universe does weird, efficient things and we only notice when the lights go off.
