Born Without Pain - Not That Lucky, Mate

Turns out some people are born without the wiring for pain. You read that and think 'ace, champion, where do I sign?' Then you picture sticking your hand in a flame and not noticing. Bit less ace. This isn't bravado or a film plot. It's a real medical thing: congenital insensitivity to pain, and when it comes with no sweating it's usually called CIPA.
What happens is the body's pain detectors either never grew properly or the nerve signals never get through. Genetics is usually the culprit. Doctors point at mutations in genes like NTRK1 or SCN9A. Those names sound fancy; the result is blunt: the alarm system's broken. No pain. No warning. Broken bones, burned feet, bitten tongues and dented faces follow, because you don't learn 'that hurts' the usual way.
It sounds handy for a day out, until you remember heat. Many affected kids can't sweat. So they can't cool down properly. Summers become dangerous. Fevers turn into proper problems. Some families remember about the sweating only after a child collapses in the sun or a too-hot bath does proper damage. And because kids explore with their mouths, teeth and lips get chewed or swallowed. Imagine explaining that at school.
There's no cure. Treatment is boring and proper hands-on: prevention. Watchful carers, removed stove knobs, cooled rooms, regular checks for infections, dentists who stop you having a mouth full of jagged edges. Some families have to teach their children to be paranoid about injuries. Paranoid, but alive.
People romanticise 'not feeling pain' like it's a superpower. It ain't. Pain is an idiot but brilliant friend. It stops you doing daft things, tells you to see a doctor, keeps you alive. Losing it is like removing all the warning lights from a car and still expecting it to behave on the motorway. Funny as a headline, grim in real life.
So next time you whinge about a stubbed toe, shut up for a minute and be thankful. There's a whole rare, messy world where not feeling a thing is the proper nightmare. And don't try to trade places with any of them, yeah?
